Why Join Us?
As a nation of free people we need to make collective choices that will benefit present and future generations. We need to insure the continuing renewal of our country. SOS America (Service Over Self) believes in the value of a one-year military experience for all our young men in order to:
- Instill the qualities of personal and group discipline.
- Provide for a sharing of experiences and backgrounds and comradeship.
- Understand the reality and the value of service to country.
- Increase pride and self esteem factors.
- Benefit the nation from their work and efforts in the active duty military, in the National Guard and Reserve Forces and in nation building efforts as part of a designated federal, state and local work force to address tasks that go wanting today due to lack of personnel.
This is not a ‘silver platter’ approach; we can’t ‘give’ the young men anything. Universal military service provides an opportunity for our young men to ‘earn their spurs’ and, basically, grow up a lot.
Taking an historical view, democracies are fragile creations. They tend to fail, even while succeeding economically, because responsible citizen involvement and restraint are lost. Prosperity, well-earned, turns to an obsession with comfort. The expectation of, even demand for, comfort and the ‘let others do it’ syndrome contribute to a gradual, and sometimes, catastrophic decline. SOS America is meant to help gain and maintain our edge as the best and most successful democracy in the history of the world. SOS America is a beacon that lights the way ahead by helping build better citizens and, thereby, a better and enduring nation.
